Saint Mary’s Sponsoring Community Forum on Catholic Healthcare

WATERBURY, Conn. (March 12, 2013) –  Saint Mary’s Hospital has designated March 19th, St. Joseph’s Day, as a day of celebration in honor of the Sisters of St. Joseph, its founding order and a continued presence at the hospital for more than 100 years. The hospital’s leadership, physicians and staff continue to honor their contributions and sustain the sisters’ legacy by hosting a St. Joseph’s Day celebration each year.

Healing and HopeIn order to both celebrate Saint Mary’s heritage and clarify its role as a Catholic hospital, Saint Mary’s Ethics Committee, Pastoral Care Department and Mission Committee are hosting “Healing + Hope,” a day-long ethics conference designed to explore what constitutes Catholic healthcare and highlight the scope, intent and specific guidelines contained in the Ethical and Religious Directives (ERDs) on Tuesday, March 19, 2013. The hospital has invited two of the nation’s leading advisors in this area to serve as guest speakers: John M. Haas, PhD, STL, M Div, President of the National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia, and Marie T. Hilliard, MS, MA, JCL, PhD, RN, Director, National Catholic Bioethics Center.

The conference includes multiple sessions, each of which will be tailored for distinct audiences, including physicians, nurses, board members, the hospital’s Ethics Committee and Management Team. The public is invited to attend a free community presentation, “The Mission of Catholic Healthcare in Our Community,” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Medical/Dental Conference Center off Union Street.

“The goal of this day is to demystify Catholic healthcare and to have people come to understand what the ERDs are all about,” said Chad W. Wable, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer, Saint Mary’s Health System. “We’re delighted to have these two nationally-recognized experts from the National Catholic Bioethics Center here with us at Saint Mary’s. We think it’s going to be an interesting and thought-provoking day.”
