Champion Dinner

Saint Mary’s Hospital Honoring Margaret J. “Peggy” Lawlor as 2014 Saint Mary’s Hospital Champion

WATERBURY, Conn. (August 15, 2014)─Saint Mary’s Hospital Foundation will honor Margaret J. “Peggy” Lawlor of Waterbury as the 2014 Saint Mary’s Hospital Champion. The award will be presented at Saint Mary’s annual Champion Dinner, which will be held at 6pm on Monday, September 8, 2014, at Aria, 45 Murphy Rd., Prospect.

The Champion Award is presented annually to an individual or institution with a history of outstanding service to Saint Mary’s Hospital. Lawlor has been a member of the Saint Mary’s Hospital family for 37 years. She joined the hospital in 1977 as Director of Marketing and Community Relations and in 1993 was appointed Vice President. In 2003, she retired from the hospital but returned in 2004 at the request of then-President and Chief Executive Officer Robert P. Ritz to serve as President of the Saint Mary’s Hospital Foundation, a role she truly defined until June of this year.

During her tenure at the Foundation, Lawlor successfully grew the donor base for Saint Mary’s and increased philanthropic support for the hospital. She established the Foundation’s reputation for excellence in special events, attracted a broad base of volunteer support and attendees, and created new events, including the Dorothy Hamill “Women Fore Women” Golf Tournament, the Champion Award Dinner, the Celebration of Lights and Wings of Hope memorial services.

Lawlor’s impact on the community extends far beyond the walls of the hospital. She has served as President of several local organizations, including the United Way of Greater Waterbury, the Waterbury Day Nursery, the Junior League of Greater Waterbury, the Women’s Committee of the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra, and as Chairman of the Volunteer Services Agency and the Mayor’s Council on Culture. She has served on the boards and committees of community organizations, including the Waterbury Chamber of Commerce, the Waterbury Arts Council and the Connecticut Community Foundation.

In 1998, recognizing the power that many individuals working to achieve, Lawlor and a colleague, Kay Campbell, founded the “Women’s Initiative Fund” at the Connecticut Community Foundation, recruiting 100 women to pledge $1,000 each to fund programs and services for the needs of women and children. Since its inception, that fund has grown to over $550,000 with 530 donors to date.

The annual Champion Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. with a cocktail reception followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The co-chairs of the event are Ada and J. Robert Anthony, MD, of Cheshire, and Cathy and Jim Smith of Middlebury.

Tickets to the dinner are $100 per person. For those participating in Saint Mary’s 2014 Champion Golf Classic at the Country Club of Waterbury on Tuesday, September 9, a dinner ticket is included in the tournament fee.
