Eight Awarded Nursing Scholarships from Saint Mary's Hospital Foundation

WATERBURY, Conn. (July 24, 2014)─ The Saint Mary’s Hospital Foundation awarded scholarships to eight nurses and nursing students who are enrolled in degree programs. The awards were presented at a scholarship reception held at the hospital on June 25. Here is a listing of the awards and recipients:

Wable,  President and Chief Executive Officer, Saint Mary’s Health System, and Katie Spizzirri, Executive Director of the Saint Mary’s Hospital Foundation.

The Charlotte H. Desmarais Graduate Nursing Scholarship was awarded to Michelle King, RN, of Middlebury. This scholarship was established by the family and friends of Charlotte Hamilton Desmarais of Middlebury to honor her lifelong commitment to nursing at Saint Mary’s. It is awarded annually to a Saint Mary’s Hospital nurse who is pursuing a graduate degree in nursing. A nurse in the hospital’s Emergency Department, King is pursuing her Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization as a Family Nurse Practitioner at the University of Saint Joseph.

The Miriam “Mimi” Magnuson Rowe Nursing Scholarship was awarded to Emily Fisher of Warren. This scholarship honors the work and life of Miriam “Mimi” Magnuson-Rowe. After she lost her battle to breast cancer in 2008, her husband, Allan, wanted to pay tribute to her memory by funding a nursing scholarship at Saint Mary’s Hospital. The scholarship has been supported by family and friends and their donations are matched annually by Allan Rowe. A 2014 graduate of Wamogo Regional High School, Fisher has been accepted into the nursing program at the University of Saint Joseph.

The Ryan P. Largay Scholarship was awarded for the first time to Chelsey Pierce of Thomaston. This scholarship fund was created in 2008 in memory of Ryan Largay by his parents, Paul Largay and Patricia Rowland. Pierce began her career at Saint Mary’s as a hospital volunteer in 2007 and been employed as a Patient Observer in the Emergency Department since 2010. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at Western Connecticut State University.

Scholarships were awarded to two Saint Mary’s Hospital nurses who are continuing their education by pursuing bachelor’s degrees in nursing: Amber Brown, RN, of Prospect and Jo-Ellen Dzamko, RN, of Roxbury. Brown has been a nurse for more than 23 years and currently serves as Clinical Manager, Same Day Surgery, Post Anesthesia Care Unit and Endoscopy at Saint Mary’s Hospital. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at Franklin Pierce University. Dzamko has been a staff nurse at Saint Mary’s since 2008 and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at Western Connecticut State University.

Student nursing scholarships were awarded to three hospital staff members: Erica Atchison of Naugatuck, who is a medical assistant at Saint Mary’s Urgent Care Center in Naugatuck and has been accepted into the nursing program at Naugatuck Valley Community College; Jennifer DeLucia, LPN, of Waterbury, who works at the Naugatuck Valley Surgical Center, an outpatient department of Saint Mary’s Hospital, and Saint Mary’s Endoscopy Department, and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Goodwin College; and Amber Mastropietro, PCA, Telemetry Unit, who is pursuing an associate’s degree in nursing at St. Vincent’s College.
