Saint Mary’s Hospital Acquires O-Arm® Surgical Imaging System

WATERBURY, Conn. (January 7, 2014) ─ Saint Mary’s Hospital has acquired a new O-Arm® Surgical Imaging System, a state-of-the-art, multi-dimensional navigation system for cranial and spinal surgeries. Saint Mary’s is one of only four hospitals in the state to offer patients the advantages of this technology, which provides 360-degree intra-operative images in real time.

Saint Mary’s Hospital Acquires O-Arm® Surgical Imaging System“This is a total navigation suite. It’s a complete system,” said Dr. David Forshaw, a neurosurgeon with Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics and Spine Specialists PC. He is one of several neurosurgeons who began using the O-Arm system to perform brain and spine surgeries at Saint Mary’s Hospital this month. Dr. Forshaw’s areas of expertise include conditions involving brain tumors, cervical spine disorders, chronic neck and back pain, degenerative spinal disorders, diseases of the spine, spinal cord injuries and scoliosis.

The new O-Arm system will eliminate the need for spot navigation during procedures. Additional advantages include:

  • Speed in the Operating Room: fast access to real-time, multi-plane 3D images (and 2D images)
  • Ease in the Operating Room: full support of the unique workflow of spinal procedures
  • Safety in the Operating Room: minimized radiation dose for surgical staff
  • Confidence in the Operating Room: visualization to confirm hardware therapy placement, potentially eliminating revision surgeries.

“This really is an exciting development,” said Betty Bozzuto, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President, Surgical Services for Saint Marys’ Health System. “We already have top surgeons and exceptional nurses and staff. Now we are adding top-of-the-line technology to make our surgeries even more efficient and safer for our patients. In addition, we are establishing a Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit, to more fully support our neurospine program and provide the best care for patients in our community.”

Saint Mary’s Hospital is the region’s leader in surgery with one of the largest robotic-assisted surgery programs in New England, an experienced and caring team surgeons trained in a full range of surgical subspecialties, and the Naugatuck Valley Surgical Center, which is celebrating more than 25 years of excellence as a freestanding outpatient surgical center.
