Saint Mary’s Names Co-Chairs for Gala 2015, “One Thousand and One Nights”

WATERBURY, Conn. (December 8, 2014) – Saint Mary’s Hospital Foundation will host the 2015 Saint Mary’s Hospital Gala, “One Thousand and One Nights,” on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville. This year’s event will feature an elegant dinner, dancing and live entertainment, as well as Saint Mary’s legendary live and silent auctions, signature gift baskets and a specialty raffle sponsored by Onyx II Fine Jewelers of Watertown.

The co-chairs of Gala 2015 are State Representative Selim and Mrs. Linda Noujaim of Waterbury and Dr. Abdulmasih and Mrs. Rawd Farah Zarif of Middlebury.

Representative Noujaim was first elected to the state House of Representatives in a special election in February, 2002. He currently serves as House Republican Whip and was appointed chairman of the Legislative Review Committee for the 2013-2015 session. Representative Noujaim is a member of the Commerce Committee, Executive Nominations Committee and the Internship Committee. He is a former Ranking Member on the Labor and Public Employees Committee, and a member of the Select Committee on Aging and the Human Services and Transportation, Higher Education and Employment Advancement, and Program Review and Investigations committees.

Outside of his legislative role, Representative Noujaim serves as executive vice-president of Noujaim Tool Company, Inc. in Waterbury. A former president and CEO of the Washington, D.C.-based American Production and Inventory Control Society, he specializes in employee motivation, training and development and has lectured internationally. He is a graduate of Post University, Central Connecticut State University, and the University of New Haven, from which he received his MBA. He also holds an honorary doctorate degree from Teikyo Post University (now Post University).

Active in civic and community affairs, Representative Noujaim is a member of the Board of Trustees of Post University, vice chairman of the board of the East End Community Club, vice chairman of the Julia Ashe Scholarship Committee, and a member of the Children’s Community School, Inc. Board of Directors. He formerly served as first vice chairman of the Board of Directors of the Greater Waterbury Chamber of Commerce; and as a board member of the Waterbury Association for Retarded Citizens (WARC), Saint Mary’s Hospital and CONNSTEP, and many other community organizations. He is a past Chairman of the Board of Directors of Seven Angels Theater; Saints Peter and Paul Church Parish Council and the Economic Development and Manufacturer’s Councils. He has received many awards for his contributions to the community.

Linda Noujaim is a native of Waterbury who graduated with honors from Waterbury Catholic High School and St. Joseph’s College (now the University of St. Joseph) with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in special education. She was a special education teacher for the City of Waterbury for 34 years. A supporter of education and the arts, Linda has volunteered her time with many community organizations, including Saints Peter and Paul School and Church, Sacred Heart High School, the American Cancer Society, the St. Vincent DePaul Society, Seven Angels Theater, the Warner Theater, and Thomaston Opera House. She was an active member of the Saints Peter and Paul Church Choir for 20 years and received the Medal of Appreciation from the Archdiocese of Hartford in 2008.  Currently, Linda serves on the Board of Directors for WARC, the East End Community Club, the Julia Ashe Memorial Scholarship Foundation, and she volunteers for the Connecticut Chapter of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation.

Dr. Abdulmasih Zarif is Medical Director of the Trauma Program at Saint Mary’s Hospital and Section Chief for General Surgery. Dr. Zarif received his medical degree from Damascus University School of Medicine. He completed a surgical internship at Saint Francis Hospital and the University of Connecticut. Dr. Zarif completed his general surgery residency training at the University of Connecticut, Saint Mary’s Hospital and Yale University with a fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Board certified in general surgery, he has been a member of the Saint Mary’s Hospital medical staff since 1997. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Rawd Farah Zarif is a licensed marriage and family therapist and certified hypnotherapist with the Advanced Solutions Therapy Center in Waterbury. She is a native of Damascus, Syria.
