Saint Mary's Hospital Collaborates with Hanger Clinic to Bring National Prosthetics Expert to Waterbury

Kevin Carroll Featured in "Dolphin Tale" Movies

Waterbury, Conn. (July 15, 2015)– It’s the stuff of movies – literally. A baby dolphin lost her tail after it became entangled in a crab trap in 2005. A world-renowned prosthetic expert stepped in to create the first prosthetic tail for a dolphin. The real life survival story of that little dolphin named Winter and innovative prosthetist Kevin Carroll, vice president of prosthetics for Hanger Clinic, has come alive on the silver screen in the “Dolphin Tale” feature films starring Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd.

Saint Mary’s Hospital has partnered with Hanger Clinic to bring Carroll to Waterbury to speak to medical professionals, amputees, and students about his involvement with Winter and the making of the movie “Dolphin Tale”. The public is invited to this event on Monday, July 27th, at Naugatuck Valley Community College in the Technology Hall Dining Room, located at 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury. Registration for the event will begin at 5:30pm with the program beginning at 6pm. Admission is free but pre-registration is required. Please visit for registration details.

Media Note – Carroll is available for phone interviews upon request prior to his visit to Waterbury. High resolution photographs and professional b-roll footage of Carroll working with the dolphin are available for download at:

While in Connecticut, Carroll will also visit Hanger Clinic locations in Waterbury (7/27), Stratford (7/28), Farmington (7/29), and Wethersfield (7/30) to educate local amputees, show them what is available with prosthetic technology and what is on the horizon. Prosthetic users wishing to visit with Carroll should call (203) 755-8840.

About Carroll: An American Board Certified prosthetist with more than 30 years of experience as a practicing clinician, visionary researcher, and skilled educator, Carroll travels daily both nationally and internationally educating clinicians and prosthetic users who work with and who are the most challenging amputation cases. Carroll has appeared internationally on news broadcasts such as Dateline, 20/20, NBC Nightly News, ABC’s Good Morning America, and the Discovery Channel. When not taking care of his human patients, Carroll volunteers weekends to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium where he continues to work with Winter, alongside his colleague Dan Strzempka, co-developer of Winter’s prosthetic tail.
