WATERBURY, Conn. (March 25, 2015) ─ Saint Mary’s Hospital has achieved Comprehensive Center accreditation from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

This designation places Saint Mary’s among an “elite group” of accredited centers in the U.S. The hospital is listed on the ACS website ( and is one of just nine accredited programs in Connecticut.

This accreditation “formally acknowledges your commitment to providing and supporting quality improvement and patient safety efforts for metabolic and bariatric surgery patients. As an accredited program you have demonstrated that your center meets the needs of your patients by providing multidisciplinary, high-quality, patient-centered care,” David Provost, MD, FACS, FASMBS, and Daniel Jones, MD, FACS, FASMBS, the MBSAQIP Subcommittee Co-Chairs, said in a letter to Dr. Aziz Richi, Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Program Director for Bariatric Surgery.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to have a center of excellence for our surgical weight loss patients and we are looking forward to continuing to grow our program,” Dr. Richi said.

Last fall, Saint Mary’s celebrated the grand opening of its new bariatric center on the seventh floor of the hospital. It features three new, private, inpatient rooms and a separate shower room, all specifically designed and equipped to meet the needs of surgical weight loss patients. The hospital has a full-time outpatient dietitian, Nowen Beebe, MS, RD, CDN, who meets with patients who are considering surgical weight loss prior to their procedures and continues counseling post-surgery. Beebe also leads Saint Mary’s Bariatric Surgery Support Group, which meets the second Monday of every month.

“With the opening of our new center, and our full accreditation by the American College of Surgeons, we are providing even more exceptional care for patients who choose Saint Mary’s Hospital for their surgical weight loss needs,” said Chad W. Wable, President and Chief Executive Officer, Saint Mary’s Health System.

Dr. Shady Macaron, bariatric surgeon, said full accreditation places Saint Mary’s Hospital among a select group of hospitals that are able to meet ACS standards, provide exceptional patient care and achieve better outcomes. “It means we are one of the best,” he said.

“We’ve had a fabulous team working on this for a very long time. It is very gratifying to see all we have accomplished together to provide this level of care for our patients,” said Susan Bongiorni, BSN, RN, Clinical Manager, PAS and Bariatrics.
