Classes Offered for Expectant Parents

WATERBURY, Conn. (July 18, 2016) – Having a baby is one of life’s greatest experiences. To help parents prepare for this exciting time, Saint Mary’s Hospital offers a series of classes led by certified educators from its Women and Infants Center.

All the classes provide information to help parents prepare, as well as an opportunity to meet and interact with members of the Women and Infants Center staff. Topics include preparing for childbirth, breastfeeding, infant car seat safety and helping siblings prepare for the new arrival. Current course offerings include:

Infant Car Seat Safety will be offered Thursday, July 28 beginning at 6:45pm in Saint Mary’s Medical-Dental Conference Center. This special two-hour class is led by certified Child Passenger Safety Seat Technicians, who will review basic car seat safety. The cost is $35. The class is available free to those who enroll in the Expectant Parents Class.

Prenatal Breastfeeding Class will be offered on Tuesday, August 2 at 6:45pm in the Women and Infants Center. This special two-hour and 15 minute class is led by a certified lactation consultant to prepare you for breastfeeding. The cost is $35. There is no charge for those who enroll in the Expectant Parents Class.

The next Expectant Parents Class will be offered on Saturday, August 13 from 8am to 3pm. Topics include labor and delivery preparation as well as comfort measures, relaxation and breathing techniques, and early newborn care. Tours of the Women and Infants Center are included. The cost is $175.

Sibling Preparation Class will be offered on Saturday, November 5 from 10 to 11am in the Women and Infants Center. This class is recommended for expectant parents during the last 2 months of pregnancy and is designed to help prepare children between the ages of 3 and 8 for the new arrival of a new sibling. Children must be accompanied by at least one parent and bring a doll or stuffed animal to practice holding, wrapping, and diapering the baby. The cost is $20,

Two additional classes are offered on an ongoing basis. Parent-Infant Massage can enhance the special bond between parents and babies, enhance relaxation, promote better sleep and aid digestion. This class is taught by a certified infant massage instructor. Total Pregnancy Fitness is led by an expert pre- and post-natal fitness instructor. Research shows that the program helps relieve pregnancy discomforts, keeps moms-to-be healthy, and prepares you for labor and a speedy recovery following birth.
