October Support Groups Focus on Weight Loss and Nutrition

WATERBURY, Conn. (September 29, 2016) ─ Saint Mary’s now offers two support groups to support patients’ weight loss and nutrition goals.

A daytime support group is offered for patients who are considering and those who have had weight loss surgery. Meetings are led by registered dieticians from Saint Mary’s Outpatient Nutritional Counseling Center on the third Wednesday of every month from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Cardiology Conference Room at Saint Mary’s Hospital, located at 56 Franklin St., Waterbury. The next meeting, on Wednesday, October 19, centers on the theme, “Health for the Holidays and Recipe Swap.” Participants will discuss ways to stay healthy while still enjoying the holiday season with friends and family and are invited to bring a favorite healthy recipe to share with the group. Saint Mary’s Weight Loss Surgery Support Group is offered to help patients succeed following weight loss surgery. Meetings are held the second Monday of every month from 5:45 – 6:45 p.m. in the hospital’s Medical-Dental Conference Center. Sessions are led by Nowen Beebe, MS, RD, CDN, Outpatient Dietitian, and co-facilitated by Amy Dumont, LCSW. The next meeting, scheduled for Monday, October 10, will feature a discussion about different types of sweeteners. Participants are invited to bring a favorite healthy recipe to share. In addition, Saint Mary’s Hospital offers a free monthly seminar for anyone who is considering weight loss surgery. The program includes information about Saint Mary’s multidisciplinary approach to surgical weight loss. Attendees have an opportunity to meet the surgeons, Aziz Richi, M.D., Shady Macaron, M.D., and Shohan Shetty, M.D. of Franklin Medical Group, who discuss the medical, physical and psychological impacts of obesity and provide an overview of the newest surgical weight loss procedures. The next meeting will be held on Monday, October 10, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Saint Mary’s Medical-Dental Conference Center. The meeting is open to the public. There is no charge to attend.
