WATERBURY, Conn. (February 24, 2016) ─ As part of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Saint Mary’s Hospital will host a live, call-in radio show on WATR 1320 AM featuring Dr. Iyare Esemuede, a board-certified surgeon specializing in all aspects of colon and rectal surgery.

The program will be broadcast on Wednesday, March 2 from 6 to 7 p.m. as part of the “Medically Speaking” series on WATR sponsored by Saint Mary’s Hospital and hosted by Robin Sills, RN, Physician Liaison.

Dr. Esemeude trained in general surgery at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He subsequently completed research fellowships at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and New York Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center. He completed a clinical fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Grant Medical Center/Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. His clinical interests include treating inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, anorectal disease, colon cancer, and rectal cancer. Dr. Esemeude is in practice with Franklin Medical Group Surgical Specialists in Waterbury, an affiliate of Saint Mary’s Hospital.

According to the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, more than 140,000 women and men are diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year, but it is a disease that is preventable and curable when detected and treated early. Unfortunately, colorectal cancer often is a silent disease, beginning with no symptoms at all. During the radio program, Dr. Esemeude will discuss colorectal cancer risk factors and screening options. He will also answer questions from listeners who call the studio line: 203-757-1320.
