Robotic Surgery Institute of New England Established at Saint Mary’s Hospital

WATERBURY, Conn. (January 7, 2016) ─ Saint Mary’s Hospital is pleased to announce the establishment of the Robotic Surgery Institute of New England, a new program dedicated to providing innovative, industry-leading, robotic-assisted surgical services, the latest technology and the highest quality care for patients.

The institute will serve as a destination for the best and brightest surgeons to learn and lead in the development of new approaches and technologies in surgical care through a shared commitment to quality, education, efficiency, innovation and patient-centered care.

A leading provider of surgical services, Saint Mary’s was the first hospital in the region to offer patients the advantages of robotic-assisted surgery. Over the past five years, Saint Mary’s robotic-assisted surgery program has performed 2,840 procedures. The program has expanded to include two daVinci Robotic Surgical Systems and more than 25 experienced surgeons offering expertise in the areas of robotic-assisted general surgery, urologic, gynecological and surgical weight loss procedures. Saint Mary's robotic surgeons have proctored dozens of other surgeons from around the state and around the country in robotic techniques.

Saint Mary’s is a statewide leader in single-site laparoscopic procedures such as virtually scarless gallbladder surgery, which is performed through one, tiny incision hidden in the bellybutton. These procedures are also performed using Firefly imaging for the da Vinci robot, technology that allows the surgeon to see structures that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye.

“Saint Mary’s is not only a very progressive and aggressive robotic surgery center but we are also a training center for surgeons from other facilities who want to learn how to perform robotic surgery,” said Dr. Philip Corvo, Chairman of Surgery. “The Robotic Surgery Institute will allow Saint Mary’s to build on the strengths of our program and carry it into the future.”
