The Department of Dentistry at St. Mary's Hospital
offers a one-year General Practice Residency (GPR) program accepting
four residents annually. The program has been fully accredited by
the American Dental Association since 1951 and participates in the
Post Doctoral Application Support Service (PASS). It is the only
general dentistry residency program offered in Greater Waterbury,
and one of only five in Connecticut, and affords participants a wide
range of clinical experiences.
Residents train at Saint Mary’s Dental Health
Center, which is attached to the hospital, providing care to a diverse
patient base with required rotations within the hospital in anesthesiology,
the Emergency Department and the Department of Medicine.
Saint Mary’s Hospital has been affiliated with
the Yale University School of Medicine as a teaching hospital for
nearly 40 years. The hospital currently offers a medical residency
program affiliated with Yale and remains one of three hospitals in
the Yale Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program, a clinical training
program in Waterbury staffed by Yale residents and attending physicians.
The hospital’s surgical residency program, a six-year training
program that is one of the oldest in the state, is also closely linked
to Yale.
All residents at Saint Mary’s have the opportunity
to participate in Research Day, a joint annual program sponsored
in partnership with Waterbury Hospital, allowing residents to present
posters, abstracts and papers based on their clinical research to
the local medical community.
Residents in the general dentistry program also participate
in community benefit programs, distributing free care through the
St. Vincent de Paul Society in Waterbury, regional health fairs and
the American Dental Association’s “Give Kids a Smile
Day.”
Upon completion of the program, some residents have
continued on to specialized training programs across the country
and over the years many have chosen to establish private practices
in Connecticut.
