Electives
Elective opportunities are available on site at Saint Mary’s Hospital. Mandatory “electives” include cardiology (PGY-1 year), neurology at the West Haven VA (PGY-2 year). In addition, through the Yale Department of Internal Medicine Residency Office, second and third year residents may choose from up to 29 medicine electives at both Yale-New Haven Hospital and the VA Connecticut Health Care System in West Haven.

Fellowship Opportunities
Saint Mary’s Hospital has no plans at this time to sponsor fellowship programs. However, Saint Mary’s Hospital is closely affiliated with Yale University School of Medicine. Through research, elective, and mandatory block rotations at Yale University, Saint Mary’s Hospital residents will interact closely with full-time Yale faculty regularly and learn more about the opportunities available at Yale and other local institutions. In addition, residents have ample opportunity to perform “away electives” with advance planning and permission of the program directorship. Former residents from the previous independent Saint Mary’s Hospital program and the Yale Primary Care Internal Medicine Training Program have seen great success in matching into subspecialty and general internal medicine fellowships and in establishing fruitful and prominent academic careers.
