Strong, healthy bones are the foundation of good health.
To make it even easier for you to take care of yourself, Saint Mary’s Hospital now offers the latest technology for DEXA bone density screenings. This quick, painless and precise screening might be your best defense against developing osteoporosis. The test takes just five to 10 minutes to complete. And the earlier you know your risk, the sooner you can be treated to slow or even reverse the effects of bone loss.
“Bone density screenings are particularly important for post-menopausal
women, who are at greater risk of suffering hip and spine fractures and developing complications of osteoporosis such as loss of height and curvature of the spine,” noted Dr. Bipin Jagjivan, a board-certified radiologist and medical director of the Department of Radiology at Saint Mary’s Hospital.
Approximately 40 percent of 50-year-old women will experience one
osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. But you don’t have to wait until a fracture occurs to know your risk.
While bone density screenings are especially recommended for women age 65 or older, your physican may recommend that you have a baseline screening earlier, often at the same time as your annual screening mammogram. For your convenience, Saint Mary’s offers the latest technology in breast imaging, including a state-of-the-art digital mammography suite. Saturday appointments are available. To schedule your screenings individually or together, please call (203) 709-6020.
