Advanced Cardiac Care Close to Home

When it comes to cardiac care, every second counts. That is why Saint Mary’s Hospital is pleased to offer to our patients advanced cardiac care close to home through the Heart Center of Greater Waterbury, a program established in collaboration with Waterbury Hospital and the University of Connecticut Health Center.

Our full continuum of cardiac care includes education, the latest diagnostic testing and treatments, including angioplasty and open heart surgery, as well as a cardiac rehabilitation program.

Our highly-skilled and experienced cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists and perfusionists are here to provide the advanced cardiac care you need, when you need it, and our entire cardiac care team is here to help you prepare for your procedure and guide you through recovery.

A full continuum of care

Education & Awareness
  • At Saint Mary’s, we are committed to helping you prevent, detect and manage heart disease.
  • Information is provided to patients by the staff of our Cardiovascular Unit prior to and following advanced cardiac procedures.
  • The hospital’s community programs offer information on risk factors, available testing procedures and the newest treatment options.
Diagnosis
  • Saint Mary’s offers a full range of diagnostic testing for the cardiac patient from routine cardiac stress tests, echocardiograms and nuclear stress tests to diagnostic cardiac catheterizations performed in the hospital’s state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab.
  • With its new “16-slice” CT imaging system, Saint Mary’s is offering Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA), a procedure that has quickly become the standard of care for imaging pulmonary emboli, and cardiac calcium scoring, one of the latest detection tools.
Treatment
  • Angioplasty is performed by a team of experienced interventional cardiologists, cardiovascular technicians, invasive specialists and registered nurses in our state-of-the-art “cath” lab.
  • Our cardiac operating room is equipped with state-of-the-art technology required to perform coronary artery bypass surgery and heart valve surgery.
  • During recovery, patients stay in the new Cardiovascular Unit for “one-stop, post-op” care.
Cardiac Rehabilitation
  • Patients recovering from a cardiac event are invited to join our group exercise program, which meets at the hospital three times per week for up to 12 weeks.
  • The program is tailored to meet the needs of each patient and includes EKG monitoring.
  • Patients may continue into a separate Wellness Program that is also available for those interested in reducing their risk of heart disease.
  • Physician referrals are required.
