Diagnosis and Testing

Saint Mary’s is dedicated to increasing awareness and education, as well as increasing patient involvement in cancer care. Our caregivers are involved in conducting local screenings and providing opportunities for you and your family to learn more about cancer prevention and treatment. Universally, early detection is the key to better outcomes.

We offer a comprehensive network of providers with expertise in cancer diagnosis and treatement, as well as advanced imaging services for cancer diagnosis such as digital mammography, ultrasound, CT scan, P.E.T. scans, MRI, endorectal ultrasound and nuclear imaging technology.

A biopsy procedure may be required, which can be performed in your physician’s office or in the operating room, depending on the type of cancer. In many cases these are minimally-invasive procedures that may be performed using image-guided technology.

If you are uninsured or underinsured, you may qualify for free screenings through the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program at Saint Mary’s Hospital. Saint Mary’s is the only site in Waterbury to offer free screenings through this program, as well as free colorectal cancer screenings through the Connecticut Colorectal Cancer Control Program.

Radiation Therapy & Chemotherapy

Our patients have access to the latest protocols and cutting-edge therapies available to fight cancer at Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center, including:

  • Dynamic Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (dMRT)
  • Prostate Seed Implant
  • The most advanced radiation treatment planning systems
  • P.E.T scans
  • Chemotherapy treatments

Radiation therapy is frequently employed to target and shrink cancer cells with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue. In 2008, the Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center invested in Synergy, ® a world-class, advanced radiotherapy system. Synergy’s 3-D technology allows physicians to deliver precisely targeted radiation beams that conform to the exact size and shape of each tumor. The advantages for patients include shorter treatment cycles, limited damage to healthy tissue, and faster recovery times.

The Leever center offers both systemic chemotherapy, which is used to treat cancers that have spread to additional regions of the body, and regional chemotherapy, a concentrated dose of medication that directly targets the part of the body containing the tumor.

Through your physician, you may also have access to ongoing cancer clinical trials.

Support Groups
