Back & Neck Surgery

At Saint Mary's Hospital, you have a range of surgical options to help treat and heal your back and neck pain.

Most people have back and neck pain from time to time. Some people have ongoing pain that gets in the way of their everyday activities, or acute pain that comes from illness or injury due to sports, improper working conditions, or in some cases, inherited conditions that affect the spine.

Common Back & Neck Surgical Procedures

Back

  • Lumbar herniated disc surgery. Try our interactive decision calculator to help you determine if surgery, or another non-surgical option, is best for you.
  • Lumbar spinal stenosis surgery. Stenosis is most often felt as a compression or pinching of the nerves in the lower back. Try our interactive decision calculator to see if surgery for this condition is right for you.

Neck

  • Discectomy (with or without fusion). The surgeon removes herniated disc material that is pressing on a nerve root or the spinal cord.
  • Cervical spinal fusion. Selected bones in the neck are joined (fused) together.
  • Spinal decompression. Pressure is reduced on the spinal cord or spinal nerve roots by removing part of a bone or disc.

Some people can consider artificial disc replacement instead of spinal fusion. This surgery is currently just for carefully selected patients, and it is done by specially trained surgeons. Doctors have not yet done long-term studies to know how well this works over time.
