Dr. CorvoPhilip R. Corvo, MD, MA, FACS

Philip R Corvo, MD, MA, FACS is the Chairman of Surgery and an accomplished minimally invasive surgeon. He has been performing hernia surgery for over 20 years, is experienced in all types of hernia repair, and teaches and lectures extensively to others on how to perform various surgeries.

Dr Corvo’s philosophy on hernia repair is simple – no two people are alike, and no two hernias are alike. Each patient must be approached individually, with an approach that is both safe and effective. Most hernia repairs can be done in a minimally invasive fashion with incisions that are ¼ -1/2 inch long. Dr Corvo extensively uses non-narcotic regional pain control techniques, and most of his patients go home after a few hours and use only ice and Tylenol for discomfort. Many patients are able to resume full activities, even going to the gym, within 1-2 weeks of their surgery.

Dr. PalestyJ. Alexander Palesty, MD, FACS

J. Alexander Palesty, MD, FACS, the Chairman of the Robotic Steering Committee and the Program Director of the Surgical Training Program, is a native of the Waterbury area. He trained in General Surgery here at Saint Mary’s Hospital where he received extensive training in hernia repairs and went on to Roswell Park Cancer Institute to learn cancer surgery. While there, he not only gained extensive experience in operative techniques for cancer, but also with hernias because many of the patients he treated were malnourished and had poor tissue, predisposing them to hernias.

On his return to the Waterbury area to practice, Dr. Palesty mastered minimally invasive surgical techniques to repair straight forward inguinal hernias, achieving excellent results. At this point he performs a wide variety of hernia surgeries from minimally invasive laparoscopic incisions to full abdominal wall reconstruction, providing treatment for virtually every type of hernia, and has earned a reputation for his diagnostic acumen in complex and complicated surgical problems and his exceptionally personalized care.

He has now added robotic techniques to his armamentarium of hernia repairs and is able to do most repairs using the latest technology. Using robotics, Dr. Palesty is able to provide lasting repairs with minimal postoperative discomfort and early return to work in a cost effective manner. At this point, he is one of the leaders in robotic hernia repair in our state, and teaches innovative robotic surgical techniques and the use of the robot to surgeons around the State of Connecticut and the nation.
